Young’s Commercial Transfer unveils new CNG Fueling Station

Last Wednesday, April 21, the Tulare Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting in Tipton, CA to celebrate the second of five CNG fueling stations at Young’s Commercial Transfer locations. This event marked a milestone in YCT’s largest green initiative yet, which includes reducing their carbon emissions by 75% over the next three years.

It is a widely known fact that California has an air quality problem, especially in the Central Valley, where Commercial Transfer is based. Because Young’s trucks run over 18 million miles each year the company is “uniquely positioned to affect this problem in California,” according to the President and CEO, Scott Daniel. In order to do so, Young’s has committed to reducing their carbon footprint through a strategic alliance with their grower-partners.

At the ribbon cutting Daniel explained that local dairies are required to trap their methane gas. It is cleaned and introduced into Southern California Gas Company’s pipeline as Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) and later used as fuel in YCT trucks. RNG is pipeline-quality natural gas produced from the decomposition of organics wastes and is the most sustainable commercially available transportation fuel. RNG provides additional and significant greenhouse gas reductions over traditional CNG and diesel.

Young’s converted 20% of their trucks to CNG in June of 2020 and is converting an additional 20% of trucks each year to reach its goal of 75% carbon reduction by 2024. This is equivalent to over 70,000,000 pounds of carbon that will not go into the atmosphere. Each gasoline gallon equivalent of RNG used in place of a 2019 model diesel engine results in an 84% reduction in carbon creation. Additionally, RNG reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 47% over electric vehicles that use typical electric grid power. By working to convert the fleet, Young’s will continue to be an industry leader in sustainability.

Not only is the CNG initiative helping to clean up the air, but it is beneficial for Young’s Commercial Transfer’s customers as well. Daniel stated, “When they are partnering with us they are sustainably sourcing and hauling their fruit or their vegetables and that is helping them win business…That is when [Young’s] is the best partner for them.”

Young’s is proud to be making a difference with its latest green initiative and will remain committed to achieving 75% carbon reduction by 2024.
